Advocacy Services

SPECIAL EDUCATION ADVOCACY:

We understand how difficult creating meaningful individualized plans can be. Working cooperatively with the school system can be hindered for a variety of reasons. The emotional experience of parenting an exceptional child can be overwhelming without the complication of attempting to secure the most appropriate educational supports. The special education process can be frustrating and upsetting for parents/guardians and it can take time to get satisfactory results. Emotions can cloud perceptions and relationships can quickly become contentious, instead of cooperative.

The Starfish Academy, for Exceptional Children offers Special Education Advocacy services on two different levels:

Level 1:   We conduct a record review and formulate a plan to be used as a guide for parent/guardians to navigate the system on their own.

Level 2:   We can go beyond plan formulation to attend meetings and walk through the process with the parent/guardians.

The level of advocacy support varies depending on the individual needs of the family.

ADVOCACY FOR FAMILIES WITH ADULT CHILDREN WHO HAVE DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES:

The need for advocacy does not end when the child graduates from formal education. The exceptional family faces many decisions and engages in many different community supports as the child becomes an adult. This process can be daunting.

The Starfish Academy, for Exceptional Children offers advocacy services to assist families in becoming more informed and assertive in accessing their disability rights in habilitation, medical services, and residential options.

RESOURCE REFERRAL:

The Starfish Academy, for Exceptional Children offers free resource referral for all families enrolled in their services.
