Behaviors and Social Skills
The Starfish Academy views behavior as communication. Often exceptional children lack the words they need to express their wants, needs, curiosities and desires. We strive to understand what the child is communicating through his behavior and meet those needs before behaviors escalate.

Perhaps the child wants to play but can’t quite figure out how to engage with his peers. Maybe he is curious about his environment and wants to explore. He could be experiencing feelings or insecurities he doesn’t understand so he acts out.

We do not attempt to control a child’s behavior; instead The Starfish Academy uses gentle teaching and positive behavioral supports to help exceptional children develop control over their own behaviors.

With careful observation we can discover the intention of the behavior. In essence, we can speak the child’s language. We can meet them where they are and guide them to more appropriate responses and interactions.

Understanding the reason behind the behavior, validating the need, and guiding the development of self-control, leads to improved outcomes in all areas of the child’s life.
