Curriculum

The Starfish Academy uses a Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills, which adheres to the Ohio Department of Education Early Learning Content Standards in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

The Starfish Academy focuses on building the skills necessary for success in formal education. We use a “right from the start” approach when introducing new material. We understand how important it is for exceptional children to be taught basic skills correctly from the start. It is much easier for them to learn it right from the start, than to expect them unlearn and relearn material that has already been presented.

We concentrate on proper writing mechanics and both phonetic and sight recognition of letters and letter sounds. We assist the children in proper grasp of scissors and writing tools. We use songs and rhymes as we give instruction in order to bring both hemispheres of the brain into learning. We have a large variety of materials which allow us to introduce concepts in the most developmentally appropriate manner.

We believe that reading is fundamental and we have a large library of children’s books available in the classroom. We incorporate literature in all Language Arts lesson plans and often combine language arts lessons with creative art projects.

By engaging the children in conversation, we build critical thinking skills and classroom readiness. By encouraging children to share and question we seize upon a multitude of spontaneous learning opportunities each and every day.

The curriculum at The Starfish Academy gives insight regarding a child’s learning strengths and weaknesses. It allows for the development of curricular accommodations that can be carried over in to the child’s formal education. The Starfish Academy can recommend appropriate materials for parents as they research a variety of childhood developmental disorders.
