The Role of Parents/Guardians
The creation of The Starfish Academy, for Exceptional Children was inspired by my own personal experience in parenting an exceptional child. I recognize the frustration and feelings of helplessness families may experience as they seek support and knowledge from professionals who do not truly know their child. I know how scary and lonely it can be to navigate intimidating systems. I have walked that path. I have banged my head on those doors. I have been incensed and outraged and at the same time humbled by the grace and strength of my child. I also know how good it feels to finally be validated and heard.
The Starfish Academy, for Exceptional Children is a Parent/Guardian Directed Program. This means the parent/guardian’s role is primary in formulating individualized plans and goals. We will use our expertise and experience to offer assistance as parents/guardians work to identify the outcomes they desire from the services of The Starfish Academy, but we will not make our opinions more valuable than the parent/guardian’s experience.
